PEDIATRIC ORTHODONTICS
Artificial teeth can be permanently fixed in order to replace the missing teeth either by taking support of the adjacent natural teeth called as bridges or can be fixed on to a dental implant (artificial tooth root). Fixed denture cannot be removed by the patient; they can only be removed by a dentist.
These are fixed type of dental prosthesis which replaces one or more missing teeth. They bridge the gap caused by missing teeth by replacing with artificial teeth and take support of the adjacent natural teeth. The supporting natural teeth on either side of the missing teeth need to be shapened/ modified in order to receive the crown. The artificial replacement tooth is attached to the crowns that cover the supporting teeth and cemented in position.
Dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is embedded within the jaw bone to hold an artificial tooth in order to replace the missing tooth. In case of a single missing tooth a single implant is indicated whereas in case of multiple missing teeth the gap can be bridged by strategic placement of multiple implants. Dental implants do not involve any modification of the existing natural teeth and closest in form and function to a natural tooth.
